Overprotected Kid

One of the biggest joys of being in pediatrics is having the opportunity to watch children grow up! One of our jobs as pediatric clinicians is to help children and parents navigate the wonderful world of Parenting. One of my favorite phrases is, “Parenting starts at 3. Up to then it is caretaking, which is time consuming but straightforward. After 3 it is parenting which is time consuming andNOT straight forward.” I usually get a chuckle from that statement but it is quite true.

Over the next several months, I will post some articles about parenting that I think are very interesting and important for today’s parents and kids. The world is complex and changing frequently. As parents, it is up to us to help our kids learn how to navigate today’s world confidently and as successfully as possible. Sometimes it requires parents to become a little uncomfortable and nervous. This article discusses the idea of risk taking and its importance in a child’s development. I hope everyone enjoys the article; it prompts some thought and allows you to incorporate some risk taking behaviors to occur with your kids.
